The 4004 was a milestone in the evolution of computing, leading to one of Intel’s most successful products: the 8086.

The “who invented the intel 4004 microprocessor” is Intel’s 50th anniversary of the world’s first commercially available microprocessor. The processor was released in 1971 and has been used on billions of devices ever since.

Intel has published an essay commemorating the 4004 microprocessor’s 50th anniversary. This CPU is regarded as a true rarity in the computer industry, since it is the first commercially manufactured microprocessor, paving the way for the myriad products and technology that we use today. The Intel 4004 was introduced in 1971, and it had a clock rate of 740 to 750 kHz and a data width of 4 bits.

Early information about the 4004:

[…] it began with a calculator. In 1969, Nippon Calculating Machine Corp. requested Intel to create a set of integrated circuits for their Busicom 141-PF engineering prototype calculator. Originally, the concept called for 12 unique chips, but Intel workers Marcian “Ted” Hoff, Stan Mazor, and Federico Faggin reworked it into a set of four, including the 4004 central processing unit (CPU), which was presented in November 1971.

Prior to the 4004 microprocessor, the only way to attain equal processing capability was to employ computers that took up whole rooms, which was neither feasible nor efficient.

“The 4004 was so groundbreaking,” recalls co-inventor Mazor, “that it took Intel nearly five years to teach engineers on how to design new products based on microprocessors.” “Intel ended up being a huge success in this venture, and the rest is history.”

Intel released an infographic that depicts the enormous breakthroughs in chip technology that have occurred since the introduction of the 4004. The number of transistors has increased from a meager 2,300 to billions, while clock frequencies have increased from 750 kHz to 5.2 GHz.
