Skyrim’s release was a triumph for Bethesda and the gaming industry as a whole. The game received worldwide acclaim, selling over 20 million copies across all platforms in its first year on shelves alone. And now, 25 years later, Skyrim is getting an anniversary edition with new features to excite fans long after they’ve completed their quest of slaying dragons and saving the world from Alduin’s destructive wrath.

The “the elder scrolls v skyrim anniversary edition difference” is a large game that has been released. It includes new features and changes, such as the ability to play with mods, and remastered graphics.

We chuckled when we first heard about The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition, Bethesda’s approach of commemorating the tenth anniversary of the company’s most popular game of all time. We had to chuckle, not because there’s anything wrong with Skyrim (it’s fantastic), but because it’s yet another re-release of the game. With that great sketch with Keegan Michael Key, Bethesda has previously poked fun at this game’s many, many, MANY ports. They ain’t kidding this time, either. The Skyrim Anniversary Edition is here, and it has its own set of selling features, so let’s see whether it’s worth another $60 of your hard-earned cash.

Get out of the gutter with your thoughts. She’s referring to a dragon.

Skyrim Anniversary Edition is basically the next-gen version of Skyrim Special Edition, which was published a few years ago on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It doesn’t utilize the DualSense in any meaningful manner, so it doesn’t take use of all of the PS5’s advantages, but it does have near-zero loading times, a much better framerate, and redone graphics and lighting effects. It essentially makes the scenery seem stunning, much better than any game from 2011 could have hoped for… but with the same strange-looking characters as the first version of the game. Yes, it’s strange, but it’s not quite as horrible as the Grand Theft Auto remasters. At the very least, Bethesda has the courtesy to keep them looking the same as they did in 2011.

The integration of modifications is the biggest “upgrade” in this edition. I know a lot of individuals who claim that “playing vanilla Skyrim is boring as hell,” so those pessimists may rest assured that their complaints have been heard… kind of. You basically have access to Bethesda’s Creation Center, which means you can only use the “premium modifications” we’ve been hearing about for the last half-decade. It’s not like you have access to all of the Steam Workshop modifications that are available for the PC version of the game, which is still the best way to play it. It improves the experience a little, but it’s not like as exciting as the prospect of playing console Skyrim with modifications.

In the end, it does seem to be attractive.

Keep in mind that if you play this version with modifications, certain trophies may get locked. There’s nothing that can’t be rectified with several save files, but it’s worth mentioning. Let’s be honest: if you want to play modified Skyrim on a console, it’s almost probable that this isn’t your first time playing the game and that you have (or have had) access to a more “vanilla” version on other platforms. Trophies and accomplishments aren’t exactly things you’ll miss after your trillionth game playtime.

It’s a Skyrim review, after all. At this point, I feel like publishing one of these is almost required.

To some, the sheer existence of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition may seem a joke, but the greater joke would be to suggest that this isn’t still a fantastic role-playing game. Sure, the inclusion of modifications doesn’t make this edition a must-have, and the game’s cost and pre-release marketing efforts haven’t helped matters, but Skyrim is still Skyrim. It’s still a fantastic game, with a few tweaks to the quality of life. Are you ready to slay dragons and take silverware from strangers for another hundred hours?

Although the improved graphics and lighting effects make this version of Skyrim more aesthetically pleasing, the characters and their motions remain archaic even for their time. Overall, stunning… from afar.

I’m disappointed by the absence of DualSense support, but I do love the superb framerate and near-zero loading times, which help to enhance the whole experience.

Excellent voice acting and a fantastic theme music. If there’s one thing in Skyrim that has aged like great wine, it’s the sound design.

Sure, the inclusion of a few modifications is good, but at the end of the day, it’s just another Skyrim with no new features. Of course, it’s fantastic, but given the billions of prior ports, it’s not exactly game-changing.

Final Score: 8.0
