World of Warcraft is a game that has been around for over 13 years and at its peak had over 12 million subscribers. The lore of the game was so deep and rich but it became increasingly difficult to tell the story of Warcraft in an MMO. The developers decided to go back to the drawing board and create a new game, Legion, which will be released later this year.

I’ve lately heard a number of people say that “every single significant event should be explained in game.” It seems that people are oblivious to the idea that the MMO had a little role in the creation of the world we care about. We could only spend time and have pleasure in that environment because of the MMO. The primary story’s emphasis on writing and gameplay, at least in my opinion, only helped to make the mythology less fascinating.
As a child, like many others including most of you, I was exposed to the fantasy genre via the Lord of the Rings films. At the time, the effect of the Lord of the Rings films was still being felt, and I was still playing games like Battle for Middle Earth. My brother was playing a strange-looking game called “Warcraft III,” and I decided to play it since it was already loaded on the PC. To some extent, I believe LOTR laid the groundwork for me to appreciate Warcraft. It was a new fantasy world with a totally different feel to it. The Rexxar campaign, I believe, is what first drew me into the world. Then I played the major narrative campaigns, and I was completely absorbed in Warcraft lore at that time. Because I didn’t have any money at the time, I was also casually playing on private WoW servers. I spent most of my time in front of Orgrimmar, either battling outside the gates or playing PVP on the battlegrounds. Questing was not something I was really interested in. I had a lot of fun leveling. Then came the release of WOTLK, and after seeing the Wrathgate cinematic, I felt compelled to read every single WoW comic book and novel available. I read every single comic book and one or two books (I don’t recall the titles, but one of them was about rescuing Alexstrazsa’s eggs and the other was about Theramore’s destruction). I was a huge fan of comic books. The mythology made the game much more fascinating for me without requiring any scripts or voice acting. Then came Cataclysm, which added additional voice acting and scripting to the game. The MMO was the primary medium for narrative in Warcraft with WoD and Legion, which I believe was a big mistake.
The notion that the primary narrative should only be conveyed in game is complete nonsense in the case of World of Warcraft. Regardless of how many scripts are in the game, I don’t believe an MMO like WoW can pique someone’s interest in the universe way comic books and novels can. Rather of concentrating only on covering a narrative, they may instead concentrate on gameplay and producing much more entertaining tales.
Some players will never be interested in the mythology, no matter how much the authors attempt to force it down their throats, and those who are will have a better time experiencing it in media that are more suited to narrative. Trying to cover battle in an MMO like WoW, it seems to me, is what has been destroying the Warcraft franchise’s narrative. Forcing the primary plot into an MMO is detrimental to both kinds of players since it restricts what they can accomplish with gaming and questing, as well as the narrative experience owing to gameplay mechanics.
Lore isn’t supposed to be the game’s issue. It should just serve as a resource for creating new missions and artwork for the game, like it formerly did. Instead, I’d like well-written and well-thought-out comics and novels that convey the primary narrative, as well as a game with enjoyable content.
